The ingredients needed to make Sweet potato balls:
  1. Get large sweet potatoes
  2. Prepare wheat flour
  3. Prepare baking powder
  4. Make ready Cardamom/cinammon (optional)
  5. Make ready Oil for deep frying

The snack is made using sweet potatoes you can get at your local supermarket. Sweet potato ball is an amazing snack available in Malaysia, in the morning or afternoon market. They are commonly sold by street vendors. Called "番薯旦" in Chinese, they are made with sweet potatoes.

Instructions to make Sweet potato balls:
  1. Wash and boil your sweet potatoes,drain water,skin and let them cool a little
  2. Mash your sweet potatoes,add flour and baking powder and cinammon,(I used cinammon)
  3. If it's still sticky add more flour until it's a nice firm yet soft dough,
  4. Cut or pinch into medium sized balls,
  5. Heat your frying oil until it's medium high hot,test with one ball
  6. If your oil is okay deep fry,
  7. You'll know they're ready once they float, fry to your colour liking I like mine just a little bit browned
  8. Serve with tea or coffee

They are commonly sold by street vendors. Called "番薯旦" in Chinese, they are made with sweet potatoes. Traditional Taiwanese taro balls use sweet potato starch (地瓜粉,红薯粉). Tapioca flour has also been used. But the texture balls produced would be slightly different.
