  1. Brown slices of sausage in oil. Add onion, garlic and ½ teaspoon salt. Cook until onion is softened.
  2. Add water, tomato paste, remaining 2 teaspoons salt, brown sugar and black pepper. Let simmer 20 minutes.
  3. Add rice and stir. Transfer to a 9×13 pan and bake at 350ºF for 45 minutes.
